Why write science fiction?
I like writing science fiction because it’s a very broad genre that includes many different styles and sub-genres. Some of the sub-genres include fantasy fiction, supernatural fiction, utopian fiction, dystopian fiction, space opera, space western, cyberpunk, and steam punk.
In my stories, I like to include a mix of both hard science fiction and soft science fiction. Where hard science deals with actual concrete science, soft science contends with economic, political, and psychological elements. There is often a simple visual aesthetic that can be a big part of the story. I also believe that you can’t just separate the hard from the soft. This is because any real technology or science will have direct impacts on the economy, politics, and human behavior at any given time. For example, the mobile phone is a product of hard science, but has had a tremendous impact on our economy, politics, and psychology. More importantly, I am attracted to the core idea of using these settings to explore philosophical questions and moral dilemmas, by detaching the reader from elements of contemporary society.
