Starting in medias res and point of view
Picking and writing from a single point of view was difficult for me. I found myself head-hopping and I had to really focus and stick with one point of view. I chose to write in the third person limited. Examining the world from that one view point was one of the most difficult things I had to work through in my first draft.
I had to figure out the how to start my story. During my editing process, I decided to forgo a detailed backstory at the beginning. I had to trust that the reader would be able to figure things out for themselves. Instead, the story tries to grab the reader’s attention from the beginning, and hold their interest enough to keep them turning the page.
